How to Cure Dry Skin

By Silvia Buchour

Dry skin is often an indication of something thatís wrong Ė either eczema just starting, or lack of sleep, stress, etc. There are certain skin conditions which need medical treatment, but then there are some wherein a few home remedies and a few improvements in your lifestyle and eating habits do just the trick. Looking for ways on how to cure dry skin? Below are a few ideas to help you get started.

1.       Bathe in lukewarm water.

Dry skin is the result of loss of moisture in the skin, and the quickest and easiest way to replace that moisture is to soak for at least 15 minutes in a lukewarm (not cold, not hot) bath. Using essential oils like lavender and chamomile also help in replenishing lost moisture. This is a simple yet effective answer for how to cure dry skin.

2.       Moisturize after bathing.

After bathing, pat your skin dry and apply moisturizer or lotion to seal in the moisture. Bathing in lukewarm water opens skin pores, thereby allowing the skin to fully absorb the vitamins and nutrients found in lotions and moisturizers. It is also a good idea to find an eczema lotion; such creams are great not only for treating eczema, but for dry skin as well.

3.       Get enough sleep.

Believe it or not, one of the ways on how to cure dry skin is something we donít do often Ė get enough sleep. The time we sleep is when our bodies repair and regenerate cells, our skin included. Not getting enough sleep on a daily basis will leave you with a tired-looking face, as well as dull and dry skin. If you get enough sleep, your skin will have enough time to repair itself, leaving you with healthy looking skin.

4.       Humidify your home.

Changes in the weather can contribute to the loss of moisture in your skin, so you should take extra steps in controlling your environment. Dry and warm air can cause your skin to dry faster, so you should humidify your home if the air is dry. You can also turn down the heat a few degrees in order to prevent your skin from drying up.

5.       Avoid soap with high lye content.

Soaps with high lye content will dry up your skin quickly, leaving it tight and flaky. Opt for soaps rich with moisturizers like Dove, or use Neutrogena as these brands are specifically designed to be gentle to the skin.

Avoiding soaps and other harsh chemicals will help you keep your skinís natural moisture. You should also consider avoiding the sun and spending hours outdoors especially when itís hot. Wearing clothing that allows your skin to breathe through will not only keep you comfortable, but will also help keep your skinís natural moisture.

Taking time to apply eczema lotion, cream, and/or moisturizer on your skin even when you donít have dry skin yet is the best answer for how to cure dry skin. As the saying goes, prevention is always better (and a lot easier) than cure.
