What is Psoriasis?
By Ellin Mahloney
What is psoriasis? This is actually a skin condition characterized
by the premature aging of the skin. The dead and dry skin does not slough off
as it would and should on normal skin. Instead, it piles up on the affected
area. The exact cause of psoriasis is unknown, but a lot of doctors and
researchers believe that it is a combination of genes and environmental
What Triggers Psoriasis
There is no single reason that
has been pinpointed and identified to cause psoriasis on anyone. However, a
combination of triggers such as infection, injuries, stress, and allergic
reactions to certain medication may cause psoriasis. Other triggers include a
sudden change in your diet and changes in the weather. However, these alone are
not the sole triggers of psoriasis. Some people experience the above-mentioned
triggers without having psoriasis.
Ways of Treating Psoriasis
When it comes to treating psoriasis, there are plenty of
options available. The first one is to use topical creams, and depending on the
severity of the condition, the doctor may prescribe the use of topical creams
plus taking oral medications. Most topical creams come with Vitamin D, which is
known to decrease the growth of psoriasis cells, as well as anti-inflammatory
agents which slow down the skin rate turnover.
Another way of treating psoriasis is to undergo
phototherapy treatments. This procedure makes use of either natural or
artificial UV light which kills off the psoriasis cells. Needless to say, this
procedure is quite expensive compared with using topical cream or making use of
home remedies. Depending on how severe your psoriasis case is, your doctor can
recommend a combination of oral medications, light therapy, plus topical
creams, or any of the two as needed.
Home Remedies for Psoriasis
Since we know what psoriasis is – a skin condition –
we know how to treat it and our different options in doing so. If you’re short
on funds and cannot afford expensive medical treatments for removing psoriasis,
you can make use of home remedies for psoriasis. One of these home remedies is
the use of dead sea salt.
Dead Sea Salt
Using dead sea salt by adding a
few cups into your bath and soaking in it for at least 30 minutes is great for
treating psoriasis as well as for other skin conditions. You can also use dead
sea salt as a scrub; mix it with lavender oil and massage it onto the affected
area and let it sit for a few minutes. You can then rinse it off with warm
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is another
psoriasis home remedy you can try out. All you need to do is to add a few drops
of ACV onto your bath and soak in it for a few minutes. ACV is known to fight
off bacteria which will prevent any infection from reaching the affected area.
ACV is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties and can lessen the
itching and redness caused by psoriasis.
Treating psoriasis depends on certain factors, the severity of the
case being one of them. Just because a certain treatment worked for someone
with psoriasis does not mean it will work for you as well. Consult with your
doctor to find out what your options are.
